I just started working for in Procurement & Contracts Services for a University which is about a half-hour away from my house on nice days and 45 minutes away on snowy days. One of the biggest draws when I applied for and started this job was that it would be a hybrid job after six months. I’ve only been here for about 4.5 months, and I have already been allowed to work from home 2-3 days per week, and I had a stretch where my car broke down where I worked remote for three weeks. During this time, I realized I enjoyed being in the office two days per week and working from home three days per week.

Today, some lady I’ve never seen before pulled our entire department into a meeting and said we would have to come back to the office full-time starting July 1st. I was immediately shocked. I said in front of everyone I feel like one of the primary reasons I applied for this job was because it was hybrid. I feel like the rug has been pulled out from under me. My department heads said they are going to try to fight it though.

There are people who work here who live even further away than I do who lose 3 hours per day if they have to get to the office. These folks were hired under false pretenses too fairly recently. My department heads said that they don’t think there will be enough desk space or parking and it will be way too loud here if everyone comes back at once.

I’m just venting here because I’m pissed. I’m hoping they decide not to go through with this. They said they’ve lost no productivity with remote work, but there are other departments on campus who are complaining because they can’t work remote and their job requires them to be on campus. I’m wondering if this is just being done to see if they can get a bunch of people to quit so they don’t have to do layoffs or something.
