I’ve been working remotely in this company since pandemic. This year we’re going hybrid. It affects employees living close within 40 miles of the office, the rest can stay on remote and should only go to the office when asked to (bigger events, visits). I lived close to the office in the past, but not anymore, so I’m still a remote worker, but here is the problem:
My girlfriend, working for the same company, lives close to the office. Our relationship has never been disclosed, but people mostly know about it. She is affected by the new regulations and already goes to the office. They won’t let her relocate now, so she can’t really go remote after all. We live separate now, but I’m planning to come back to that city and live there with her, but technically I should change my address in the system, tell the company and then, bam, I’m forced to do hybrid, which I would really despise.
If I would move there and they’d ask me to come to the office, I’d have to keep on lying in their faces. People could bump into me on the streets (800 000 habitants there). We also have some friends there, who probably would know/suspect that we live together. A word could go from one to another and sooner or later someone will know. Maybe no one would care?
What should I do? I’d like to keep the job, most importantly keep it hybrid, while I look for the other options.
Tl;dr Want to relocate closer to the office, but I might be forced to go hybrid if I do so
