I work from my apartment and most of my team is remote, but our communication norms are starting to feel like they expect everyone to be available 24/7.
We use Slack a ton and it feels like if you do not reply in a few minutes, people assume you are not working. I keep my calendar up to date and try to block focus time, but I still get pings like “quick question” or meeting invites dumped on top of my blocks. If I do not answer right away, I get follow ups. If I respond immediately, I just train people to expect instant replies.
I do not want to swing too far the other way and come off as hiding or being difficult. My work is deadline driven and I can usually deliver, but the constant interruptions make it harder to actually do the work.
For people who have found a healthier balance:
-
What norms or scripts have actually helped reset expectations, especially with people above you?
-
Do you use Slack status, Do Not Disturb, scheduled send, or something else in a specific way that works?
-
How do you protect calendar blocks so they are respected without having to defend them every time?
I am looking for practical habits or wording I can use, not company policy arguments. Any advice from people who have made this balance work would help.
