Hey guys, I’m a software engineer and I recently joined a company that seems to be mostly (like 98%) remote, with an international team. Now, I have my own equipment which I own and which I have invested a lot of money in, so that it can be the best tool possible for me, and ever since I started working from home back in 2021 I’ve been using it to contribute to software for the companies I’ve been working in, none of them had an issue with that.
This company I just joined, though, has informed me that I’m expected to use the work equipment (consisting of a laptop) that they have provided me after I asked them whether it would be okay to use my own equipment in conjunction with their provided work equipment, which seems to suggest to me that they don’t like the idea of me using my own equipment. I asked them that because I know some companies have that policy.
And that is a big bummer to me, primarily because both computers that I own are much more powerful and capable than the laptop I’ve been provided, and they’re setup with multiple screens and it would also be a pain to rewire things so I can use those screens with the laptop, for example. On the work computer I’m not even allowed to use Linux which is the operating system I’ve been using for pretty much forever and is also the system I’m most comfortable with. They want me to use Windows, and I suspect that the laptop is monitored by the company and I’m not sure I feel too comfortable about that.
I just feel that I’d be able to do much better work using the equipment I have already invested in, much quicker and with less headaches, my performance would simply be better. And I know that using the Windows laptop with a tiny screen they provided me would simply be a pain on my left testicle, because I’ve tried that multiple times in the past. Would it be unethical for me to just ignore that policy, and use my own equipment in conjunction with theirs anyways? Should I insist in trying to talk with the RH and IT people in the hopes that I’ll be able to convince them to allow me to use my own equipment? I feel like it would be difficult to make them bulge, and I really would like avoid having to use that laptop exclusively. How would you guys feel in a situation like this?
I have no intention of stealing their software, I just want to get work done and I feel like some policies these corporations implement really get in the way of that.
