Just been told that we need to return to the office for 50% of our time, and tinfoil hat on I think this is being done to reduce staff numbers, by making our jobs less desirable
During covid and our subsequent WFH our productivity went through the roof, personally I got an exceptional and exceeded all expectations in every yearly review.
At home I have a nice desk, great chair, and 2 x 32″ 1440p monitors, nice keyboard and mouse, my connection to the workplace is excellent. In the office, and I kid you not our desks have 15″ square monitors, that are 1080p with VGA Connectors, and for some reason the network in the office if bad compared to being at home. I work on complex projects, with large data sets, stored in multiple applications, it’s clearly going to fuck my productivity.
So, what’s the advantage, according to the company it’s in person collaboration! Well, that’s a brilliant idea, all my team members are in different offices, as our company has regional offices throughout the country, so I won’t be getting any in person collaboration. All the stakeholders and partners I work with, they are in different offices, all my collaboration will still be virtual, I will be in teams calls, or teams’ meetings, speaking to people in other offices.
Well fuck it there are going to be consequences, firstly no more staying late for meetings or calls, no more early calls or meetings, no more working lunches, I log on, do my hours, take my lunch break, then log off.
All the additional stuff I do, mentoring, ally for inclusivity groups, mental health first aider, champion roles and testing new systems and processes, I’ll be stepping back from all of that, due to the reduction in productivity ill need to focus on my role exclusively. And when I am at home for 50% of the month, no more using my own equipment, the monitors are mine for personal use, from now on I will only use the company issued laptop, which will bugger productivity even more. All the conferences that I am not obligated to go to, the plan for me to train people at another office for 2 weeks, staying away from home………. that’s not happening, not part of my role profile, they can stick that up their arse.
