As a US citizen, is working remotely for people in foreign countries a safe choice?

I got a message from LinkedIn saying that there’s a remote job opportunity with a verified client based in India, and it got me wondering. I’m a natural-born US citizen, so I don’t think I need to worry about visas. However, do you guys think applying and working for clients outside the US is a good idea? When I thought of applying to jobs, I always looked into working for people in the US, but I’m uncertain how this alternate perspective with foreign neighbors will go. I don’t really know how to react to it, or if it’s safe, and the last thing I want is to fall victim to a scam or fraudulent company. I do try to do my own research on the inquiring companies though.
