Are we overpaying for simple tools like Loom?

We use Loom a lot on our remote team for basic stuff. Our team loved it, so we switched to their paid version. It was fine for a while, but then the prices went up.

We got annoyed enough that we moved our recordings to a simple setup running in our own AWS. It only took us a couple of hours to set up, and we’ve been using it for a while now. It’s definitely not like a premium finish like loom or anything

but honestly we don’t feel much of a difference because we weren’t using most of Loom’s features anyway.

That got me thinking for something as simple as recording a screen and sharing a link, does it really make sense to pay a subscription per person forever?

Obviously not every tool is simple enough to run yourself, but screen recording feels like one of those things where we were mostly paying for convenience.

Has anyone else gone this route with Loom or other simple tools your remote team uses?

Do you prefer paying for the convenience, or would you rather spend a couple of hours setting something up yourself and avoid the per-seat subscription?
