In my last five years as a university prof in Thailand, I was tasked with editing Ph.D. dissertations. Not digitally, but physical printouts. No classes to teach. It was a dream.

I’d fill a shoulder bag with 4-5 dissertations (about 10-12 days of work) and travel to the mountains of Chiang Mai, the beaches of Phuket, the cities of Vietnam, Laos, Singapore, The Philippines, etc. I edited papers from thatched-roof huts to swanky hotel lobbies, on trains and aircraft, and quaint little restaurants/coffee shops at the edge of the jungle or ocean.

Just had to turn in my work every couple of weeks.

After five years of this vagabond work style, it all came crashing down when a jealous colleague learned what I was doing and complained to the faculty dean. Back to the office! 😬
