My office is ending its pilot work-from-home program. We’re allowed to reapply for remote status if our commute is more than 90 minutes or meets a certain mileage requirement.
Over two years ago, I updated my address on file to an address that would meet the 90-minute commute requirement. However, I’m still living at my previous address, which is about 1 to 1.5 hours from the office depending on traffic.
I recently realized that my company laptop appears to track location. My employer is very tech-savvy, and I access company systems through a VPN that connects to the nearest node.
I’m located in California and only work from within California.
If I reapply for remote status, could I set up a router at the address on file and leave it there so that my connection reflects that location? Has anyone done something like this successfully? What are the risks, especially with VPN use and employer monitoring?
