My company has me on a hybrid system, two days in the office and three remote. For a while during the peak of the Corona crisis, we were all working fully remote, and honestly, I really liked that system. I can tolerate the commute, it’s not the end of the world, but all my work is digital anyway, so I feel like coming in is pointless most of the time.

I’m considered one of the younger people here and my health is good, so for me, it’s just an annoyance and nothing more. But I was talking to a colleague of mine who has been here for over 15 years, a man in his late fifties. He’s been working fully remote since everything shut down because he has a chronic illness that makes his immune system very weak. Being in a crowded office is a real danger to him. He told me yesterday that he’ll probably have to quit because the company basically gave him an ultimatum: either come back to the office next month or you’re out. To me, this is unbelievably unjust and cruel. This man has given so much to this place, they should show some flexibility, especially since his working from home is a necessity on his doctor’s advice.

I really can’t understand this obsession with people having to be sitting in their chairs in the office, especially when we’ve all proven that we can do our jobs very well from home. The whole thing is messed up, and I really hope he lands on his feet and finds another company that truly values him.
