Hi,
I work remote for 10 years as subcontractor for big company in Scandinavia. Pay is ok (market rate, but no paid vacation/sick, I buy my own hardware).
I basically maintain 1–2 projects that I originally built years ago. I keep modernizing them (new JS framework, UI/UX, new features). It is like golden cage – I earn better than in my country, but I don’t grow much.
Problems:
- manager changes mind a lot
- he writes DM with strange/silly questions (I feel he checks if I work)
- I have very limited visibility to other projects
- when I do important task that helps other teams, I get zero positive feedback, sometimes even cold attitude after
- he sometimes replies to my private DM on public Slack channel
- few months ago I found out there is new project that will replace mine – 100% hidden from me, I have no access
- there is also small service that connects old and new system – also I have no access
So… should I escape from this silo now? Or stay quiet, milk it until current project dies, and save more money?
