I started working with my current employer last year and have listed my family home in NJ as my primary residence, which I still consider it to be. For 2024, I only paid NJ state taxes, despite the company being based in NYS, since I work from home. This year, I have been staying with my boyfriend in NYS for 2 months now. I have not signed a lease but I do technically have an abode and if we end up staying here most of the year, that would consider me a statutory resident of NY and resident of NJ per domicile. I have not informed my employer yet but they might already know from my IP and I want to get ahead of a potential problem. I guess I have two choices –

  1. Keep NJ my domicile and inform HR/payroll to take additional taxes for NY state, and then file both as resident/part-time resident when the time comes. Would that be a headache? Would I need another W-4? Financially, is this a big loss?
  2. Move my driver’s license, plates, insurance, and consider NY my domicile. My concern with that is having to move everything back to NJ as again, I am not sure how long we will be staying here, I am in my 20s and still figuring out where I want to live ultimately.

Any advice or past experience with something similar appreciated.
