I think that they (boomers) think we’re all very lazy because we grew up with more technology than them. And we did grow up with more technology than them, however, that doesn’t mean that roles haven’t shifted. Along with that technology we’re still having to learn just as much as they did in a different capacity.
– Haley’s perspective on how previous generations view millennials in the workplace
Haley Stafford: A Millennial Thriving in Remote Work
In the ever-evolving landscape of the professional world, one individual stands out for her success in navigating the challenges and opportunities presented by remote work. Meet Haley Stafford, a dedicated and hardworking millennial, thriving as a Public Relations Manager for Brielle Cotterman Media. With over five years of experience in remote work, she shares insights into her journey and offers valuable advice for those considering or currently engaged in remote employment.
Need for Flexibility and Autonomy
Haley’s remote work journey began over half a decade ago, propelled by her desire for a flexible and autonomous work environment. As a millennial, she found herself navigating the challenges of starting a career amidst the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, providing a unique perspective to her remote work experience.
The Importance of Mentorship in a Remote Environment
One of the key aspects Haley emphasizes is the importance of proactive engagement in mentorship. In a remote work setting, where face-to-face interactions are limited, asking questions becomes vital. Haley underscores the significance of scheduling regular meetings with managers and colleagues, ensuring that communication channels remain open. For her, being a proactive question-asker has been instrumental in gaining the mentorship needed for professional growth.
Combating Isolation in a Remote Setting
Addressing the challenges of remote work, Haley acknowledges the potential for isolation. However, she counters this by highlighting the importance of persistence and the ability to schedule regular one-on-one meetings with supervisors. In her view, the responsibility for scheduling these meetings is a two-way street, requiring both the employee and the manager to actively participate.
A Delicate Balance for This Extroverted Introvert
Reflecting on her remote work setup, Haley sheds light on the autonomy she enjoys in her current role. Working for a fully remote company with clients scattered across different states allows her to embrace diversity and connect with individuals beyond her hometown. Despite occasional in-person meetups, the flexibility of working remotely aligns seamlessly with her extroverted yet introverted nature.
Balancing Work and Life
Intriguingly, Haley’s decision to pursue remote work was influenced by her desire to start a family in the near future. She emphasizes the need for flexibility in raising children and avoiding the constraints of a traditional office setup. Remote work, for her, represents an opportunity to balance career aspirations with family life, challenging the notion that one must choose between being a career professional and a dedicated parent.
A Persistent and Proactive Approach
In her quest for remote employment, Haley’s journey involved a meticulous six-month search, eventually landing her current role through LinkedIn. Persistence and assertiveness during the application and interview process were key factors that set her apart. She encourages others seeking remote opportunities to reach out to hiring managers directly and clearly communicate their availability.
Perceptions of Millennials in the Workplace
When it comes to perceptions of millennials in the workplace, Haley challenges the stereotype of laziness. While acknowledging the technological advantages her generation grew up with, she emphasizes the work ethic and dedication that millennials bring to the table. Far from being lazy, Haley sees her generation as opportunistic, with a drive to implement positive changes in the workplace, especially in prioritizing mental health.
Conclusion
As an individual, Haley describes her workplace persona in three words: dedicated, hardworking, and goal-oriented. These qualities, coupled with her proactive approach, have undoubtedly contributed to her success in the remote work arena.
In a world where the traditional office landscape is undergoing significant transformations, Haley Stafford stands as a testament to the thriving potential of remote work. Her journey provides valuable insights for those navigating the complexities of a remote professional life, offering a blueprint for success in the ever-changing realm of work.
