Meet Allie, In Transition & Children’s Book Author

Allie joins us on the podcast and we cover a lot of topics during our discussion. She is currently in-transition and seeking remote work opportunities in a non-profit, tech for good or mission-based organizations.

Allie took a leap and moved to Morocco a few years ago and has traveled and worked around the world with her young daughter primarily through house-sitting. While she’s looking for her next full-time role, Allie has written What Will I Be Next? which is a children’s book about travel and learning which was illustrated using AI applications.

On this episode, we talk about:

  • Allie’s perspective about seeing the world and gaining new experiences without earning a high income.
  • Travel hacking by offering house sitting services on trustedhousesitters.com while allowing her to live and work in a new country.
  • We talk about her ADHD and Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria. Remote work allows her to make contributions without triggering the emotional sensitivity of perceived rejection by bosses, peers or loved ones.
  • We discuss how her ADHD allowed her to laser focus and complete her new book, What Will I Be Next?, when she set her mind to write a book.
  • Allie taught herself AI artwork and design tool, Artssy, to help her illustrate her book after illustrator proposals were too cost prohibitive.

If you want to connect with Allie, you can find her on LinkedIn or her website, allierenar.com.

Q & A with Allie

Why did you want to Work From Home Forever?

  • I began working remote in 2016 when I decided to move to Morocco. A lot about that didn’t end up how I expected but I found my skills and abilities were much better in full time remote work. As someone with ADHD and a new baby remote work helped me succeed.

How long have you been Working From Home, Forever?

  • Since December 2016.

What trade offs, if any, did you make in order to Work From Home Forever?

  • I have actually grown my career since going fully remote. I was no longer held back by location or fear.

How do you manage work/life balance Working From Home, Forever?

  • I have a lot of systems in place to help me be organized and I use technology to my advantage. I am currently looking for my next remote role but I’ve learned that I can be more productive with a better work life balance, even working 4 days a week for the past 2 years.

What’s your best advice to others who want to Work From Home Forever?

  • Learn the technologies because without them you will have a hard time adapting and being productive. Also, don’t depend on your job for socialization, instead use remote work to your advantage and see the world. Even with a small income you can see some amazing places. I was making $15/hr as a remote agent in 2018 and started traveling the world. You just need to be creative.

What are your three must-haves to Work From Home, Forever?

  • A laptop, remote income and a suitcase.

Pilar shared her journey into remote work, which began in 2011, driven by her need to travel frequently to visit family. Initially trained as an actress, Pilar transitioned to remote work, finding comfort in working from home and utilizing coworking spaces when necessary. Pilar discussed her experience with coworking spaces, noting the practical challenges such as commuting time, costs, and temperature discomfort. She ultimately found working from home more comfortable and convenient. Pilar has set up a cozy home office with a standing desk and plenty of natural light, sharing the space with her husband, who prefers coworking spaces. Pilar emphasized the importance of maintaining work-life balance, avoiding work apps on her mobile phone, and setting boundaries with clients regarding availability. She highlighted the need for understanding individual work preferences and creating a work environment that supports personal well-being.
